At their June 24 board meeting, the SCS Board of Education approved a principal recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Jamie King.

Experienced school administrator Curtis Daughtry has been named the new principal of Hobbton High School, effective July 1, 2025.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to return to a great school and community and to provide instructional leadership to the exceptional students and staff at Hobbton High School,” said Daughtry.

Mr. Daughtry brings more than 25 years of experience in education to Wildcat Country. He has served in a variety of roles, including classroom teacher, coach, and school administrator. He is returning to Hobbton High School, where he previously served as assistant principal for seven years.

Before his most recent administrative role as assistant principal at Midway High School, Mr. Daughtry spent two years at Southwest Randolph Middle School teaching 8th-grade Science and Math. He also dedicated 17 years at Triton High School teaching Biology, Earth Science, and AP Environmental Science, as well as coaching baseball and wrestling.

Mr. Daughtry earned a Master of Education in School Administration with distinction from Campbell University, a Secondary Education certification in Biology from Mars Hill University, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UNC-Wilmington. He is also a proud member of the first graduating class of Triton High School in Erwin and a US Navy veteran.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Tonya Colwell as the new principal of Union Elementary School, effective July 1, 2025.

With more than 36 years of experience in education, Ms. Colwell has served in a variety of roles including classroom teacher, athletic coach, and administrator. She also brings nearly 10 years of experience working at the university level as an instructor and coach. Her extensive experience in student engagement and staff mentorship highlights her dedication to building strong relationships and fostering a positive, inclusive school community.

Ms. Colwell’s journey in education began at Union High School, making her return to the Union community especially meaningful. "My first teaching position in the public school system was at Union High School, so God's plan has moved me full circle,” said Colwell. “Having served 36 years in this profession has allowed me to meet and work alongside some amazing people, leaving priceless memories. I look forward to working with the Union staff, the community, and building positive relationships that will help our Lil' Spartans grow into productive citizens."

Ms. Colwell earned both a Master of Education and a Master of School Administration, each from Campbell University, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Campbell University. After graduating from Campbell, she served as the assistant women’s basketball coach for over 10 years and remains a proud Campbell alumna.
