Course Description: Seventh Grade ELA focuses on strengthening reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and writing skills. Students will explore a variety of literature - drama, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. Students will learn to express themselves clearly in speaking and writing. The course emphasizes critical thinking, vocabulary development, grammar, and research skills.

Technology/Internet: All students are required to read, sign and follow the Acceptable Use Policy, regarding technology and the internet. Students are responsible for their behavior and communication when using these resources. Students are expected to be ethical, respectful, academically honest, and supportive of student learning.

Electronic Devices: Keep all electronic devices put away, unless we are using them (this includes cell phones and laptops). If we are using laptops to complete an assignment or activity, it is expected that you stay on task.

Attendance: If you know you are going to miss class, please let me know in advance. You are expected to make up any work you miss while absent. Class material and assignments will be posted in Google Classroom or in the designated location in the classroom. If you are able, you should complete your assignments before returning to school. If you miss class on the day of a test or quiz, you will be responsible for scheduling a time to make up the test or quiz with the teacher.

Classwork : 20%

Homework 20%

Test/Projects: 35%

Quizzes: 25%

Academic Integrity: Students are expected to complete their own work. Plagiarism, defined as using someone else’s work or ideas as their own, will NOT be tolerated. If a student is found guilty of plagiarism, they WILL NOT receive credit for the assignment. If a student uses artificial intelligence, they WILL NOT receive credit for the assignment.

Late Assignments: You are expected to complete and submit all assignments by the date and time due in Google Classroom. You will receive a 10% grade deduction for every assignment submitted after the due date/time. After one week (7 days from when the assignment was posted), you will not have the opportunity to submit the assignment for credit. For example if the assignment is due on Wednesday and you turn it in on Friday. The highest grade you can make if everything is accurate is a “90”. If you have an (excused absence) you will have the opportunity to turn in the assignment for full credit,

Course Objectives

Reading Comprehension: 1) Analyze fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama for key ideas, themes, and details. 2) Identify and explain the author’s purpose, point of view, and use of literary devices. 3) Support answers with specific text evidence

Writing Skills: 1) Write clear, organized essays and constructed responses with a strong focus, purpose, and audience 2)Develop and support arguments using logical

reasoning and relevant evidence 3) Revise and edit writing for clarity, style, and correctness in grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Speaking and Listening: 1) Participate actively in discussions, asking and answering questions to deepen understanding 2) Present ideas clearly and confidently in both formal and informal settings 3) Listen attentively to others and respond respectfully

Language Development: 1) Apply grade-level grammar, vocabulary, and conventions

in both speech and writing 2) Use context - clues, word parts, and reference materials to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
