Course Description/Objectives: English II is an English course designed to teach students to identify and to analyze the literary elements essential to powerful writing. Students will demonstrate the ability to implement new vocabulary, employ varied writing techniques, and incorporate specific grammar components in their individual and academic writing. Students will be thoroughly familiarized with the steps and techniques of the writing process, with emphasis on providing textual support. English II students will become comfortable with research, evaluating and making inferences about literature, and making presentations. English II students will take the Standardized, End of Course English II test at the end of the semester, which will count for twenty percent of their final grade.

Responsibilities and Expectations for the NC Honors Curriculum

As the facilitator of this honors level course I am responsible for:

Possessing the skills, knowledge, and disposition to facilitate an honors level course with advanced curriculum content.
Develop and implement a differentiated curriculum based on current innovations and research in the subject area in order to deliver an honors level course to support the growth of students with advanced learning needs.
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to engage students with advanced learning needs.
Communicate with students, parents, and administrators to maximize student success.

Students enrolled in honors level courses will (includes, but not limited to):

Demonstrate the interest, ability, and motivation and/or the potential to interact with the honors level content.
Exhibit personal responsibility for learning.
Engage in an advanced level of learning through high quality work.
Complete any prerequisite course(s) leading to the honors level course.
Communicate with the teacher if additional support or challenge is needed to support achievement and growth.

Parents/Guardians of students that are enrolled in honors level courses will (includes, but not limited to):

Recognize the requirements and expectations of an honors level course.
Support students to perform at an advanced level of learning.
Communicate with teachers as needed to maximize their student’s success.

Course Requirements:

Be on time and prepared to learn daily. Students are expected to be in their seats, working on the bellringer assignment when the bell rings.

Make a note of all assignments and due dates in your agenda/planner/notebook.
Keep up with assignments and submit them on the appropriate due dates
Be kind and respectful of your teacher and classmates while in class or online. This includes following all Sampson County Schools rules and guidelines.
Ask questions when you are unsure.

Attendance Policy: In accordance with statute NC Gen. State. 15-378, the Board of Education expects all students to be present at school each day and to be on time for classes in order to benefit maximally from the instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline and responsibility. There is a direct relationship between poor attendance and class failure. Students who have good attendance generally achieve higher grades, enjoy school more, and are much more employable after leaving school. In high schools, students must be in attendance for at least two-thirds of the class period to be counted present. *Please see the SCS Student Handbook for more information in regards to the attendance policy.

Enrichment: All students at Sampson County Schools have the opportunity to participate in enrichment during this assigned flex time. Remediation enrichments are mandatory for students who are not making adequate progress in a course. Students that receive 70% or below will be placed in a weekly remediation/intervention session until a satisfactory percentage above 70% is earned.

Students who miss a required remediation will be reported to the office for failure to attend.

Late Work Policy: For each day an assignment is late, you will lose 30 points, unless you have communicated a valid reason to the instructor. Flexibility and an understanding that circumstances arise are present, but it is your responsibility to communicate with the instructor. Failure to appropriately submit an assignment is no excuse for it being late.

Academic Integrity

All plagiarized work will result in a zero on the assignment. Plagiarism constitutes any unoriginal work that you claim as your own. This includes Artificial Intelligence (AI). This includes copying classmates’ work, copying from online sources, quoting or using information from a source without giving proper citations, and any other form of academic dishonesty or cheating. This will always result in a zero for your assignment.
