Hello! My name is Mrs. Cyndi Cantrell. I have been teaching either kindergarten or first grade since 1990. I have my Masters in Education and I have my National Boards certificate. At the beginning of my teaching career, I taught hearing-impaired students in Wake County. Then I moved to Rutherford County where I taught from 2003-2016. In 2016 we moved to Sampson County and I have been here since.
My passion is seeing young children learn to read and write. It is a joy to watch their progress and excitement of learning new skills. I believe all students can make growth.
Curriculum:
In first grade we will cover:
In reading we will learn how to sound out and spell using short vowels, long vowels, blends, digraphs, and some vowel teams. We will work on comprehension and fluency as well.
Writing will work on making complete sentences with a subject and predicate. Sentences should make sense, and be spelled using the phonics rules we have learned so far. We will write narrative stories, opinion pieces, and informational texts.
Math will cover number sense (order, greater/less than), addition/subtraction strategies, two digit addition without regrouping, counting to 150, measurement, telling time to the half hour, fractions, data, and writing numbers to 120. Students should learn math facts to 10 fluently.
In our Knowledge subject we will work on Social Studies and Science subjects. We will cover: Habitats, Astronomy, Human Body, Early Civilizations, Geology, Fables, Fairy Tales, and many other subjects.
