Battle of the Books was started by the North Carolina Association of School Librarians to encourage students to read a variety of genres. Each year school librarians across the state nominate books that they would like to see on the list. A compiled list is available in the spring every year. The middle school list is usually 27 titles from a wide variety of genres, lengths, and topics. It is not necessary to read all the books, but it is extremely helpful. Our county holds a competition in the spring for the books that were selected the previous year. The four middle schools compete against each other. The questions are very specific and it is not easy to remember which book to choose. Two points are given for the title of the book and an additional point is available if you can give the author too. Teams consist of 12 members; only 6 of which are allowed on the stage at one time. The group on stage is allowed to help each other. Interested students need to speak to Mrs. Malahias in the spring about the year following or right at the beginning of the year for that year.
See the NCSLMA website for the booklist. Choose competitions, then MSBOB, then booklist for 2018-2019.
