Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble

Mr. Jesse Shelton is the assistant director of bands at Midway High School. He is a classical and jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and flautist from Dover, PA. Jesse holds a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and a Bachelor’s degree in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies from East Carolina University. His recent performances in the classical idiom include two appearances with the East Carolina University Symphony Orchestra as the saxophone soloist on Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and tenor saxophonist soloist on Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet: Suite no. 1. In the jazz idiom, Jesse has performed with the likes of Rod Stewart, Bobby Watson, Dafnis Prieto, Carroll Dashiell Jr., Michael Friend, Lenora Helm-Hammonds, and Marcus Parker among others. He has also performed as a member of the Downbeat award-winning Frost School of Music Concert Jazz Band.  

Mr. Shelton enjoys working with music students of all age levels and backgrounds. He has been a staff member at Clayton High School, Havelock High School, and the East Carolina University Summer Band Camp. Outside of band, Mr. Shelton is a diehard Milwaukee Bucks fan, Baltimore Ravens fan, and University of Maryland basketball fan. He enjoys playing sports, watching BBC nature documentaries, and hiking.
