FAMOUS ARTISTS
Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) Pierre Auguste Renoir was one of the first French Impressionist painters. He was also a sculptor. Renoir's paintings often depicted children, women and everyday middle-class life in France. Images of his wife and children appear in many of his works.
Mary Cassatt (1845-1926) Mary Cassatt was a famous American painter who was known for her paintings of women and children. Many of her paintings show people doing everyday things. Cassatt studied in Paris with a group of artists called Impressionists. They used dashes of primary colors to give their pictures a bright, vivid look.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) Claude Monet was a French Impressionist painter. Impressionists create pictures that show scenes as they might appear at a quick glance. Most of Monet's paintings show outdoor scenes. He was particularly interested in how light affects the way objects look at different times of the day to see how sunlight affected it.
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter who expressed strong emotions rather than reality in his paintings. this style became known as Expressionism. During his short painting career of less than ten years, van Gogh created over 800 paintings. He sold only one painting during his lifetime, but today his paintings are worth millions.
