CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT

To be part of the education process by ensuring that students are
provided with a nutritious meal and nutrition education
experiences that promote healthy children who are ready to learn.

Students Succeed with School Meals

Sampson County Schools Child Nutrition Department strives to provide students, faculty, and staff with low-cost, high-quality nutritious meals.  We are proud that we serve approximately 4,000 breakfasts and 7,000 lunches daily.  All Kindergarten students qualify for free breakfast regardless of income category due to grants from the state of North Carolina.  Sampson County Schools participates in the after school snack program and operates Seamless Summer Feeding Sites.

The meals we serve are continuously changing due to state and federal legislation.  Recent legislation has brought about the need to reduce fat, increase whole grains, increase legumes, and alter food preparation techniques.  We realize that many people are not receptive to changes and that change does not always occur immediately; therefore, we are trying to implement a progressive, yet gradual approach to offer healthier menu options.   We are constantly looking for new and innovative approaches.

Sixteen schools prepare food on site.  Hobbton Middle School prepares food for the Alternative Program, Structured Day Program, and Sampson Early College High School and the plates are transported to their facilities.  Entrees consist of a combination of convenience and homemade foods.  Students can choose between a minimum of two entrees daily.  Two fruit choices and two vegetable choices are served daily.  In addition, fresh fruit and salad are served daily when available.  Milk choices include 1% plain, 1% strawberry, skim plain, and skim chocolate.

Research has shown when students are properly nourished, test scores increase.  Make an investment in your child’s education that will continue to repay you.  Whether a meal from school or a nutritious meal sent from home, make sure that your child is getting the proper nutrition they need daily.   We encourage parents and/or guardians to reinforce healthy eating habits at home by monitoring the amount of fat, calories, and sodium in foods.  Sampson County Schools believes that by working together, with community and other governmental agencies, we can make a difference in the health of our students.
